New Transport Scheme

Transport scheme unveiled
STATE-of-the-art designs for a new £14.5m bus and rail interchange in Castleford have been unveiled.

Metro has revealed its plans for the high-tech interchange which will include a covered central waiting area, bus and rail travel centre, electronic display boards, a public address system, cycle parking, public toilets and baby changing facilities, long and short-stay car parks and a taxi rank.
Security at the station will be improved with centrally monitored 24-hour CCTV recording, help and information points and management and security staff on-site.
Townsfolk can view the plans at Carlton Lanes shopping centre from November 13-18 and Metro staff will be on hand to discuss the proposals. Plans can also be viewed at the existing bus and rail stations.
Coun Graham Phelps, Metro's Wakefield district spokesman, said: "This is an opportunity for Metro to give Castleford an imaginatively designed, flagship facility for public transport which combines the award-winning standards of Metro's bus station redevelopments across West Yorkshire with our experience of developing new, high-quality rail stations.
"The proposed new interchange will provide a dramatic and architecturally impressive gateway for visitors arriving in the area and provide local bus and train passengers with a fantastic improvement in waiting facilities, while also improving links to and from the town centre."
The development will see improvements to pedestrian routes to the town centre and the subway on Welbeck Street.
Metro is expected to submit its proposals to a planning committee next month.
